Analysis of Words by Edward Thomas

This is one of several poems included in the 2011 OCR A-Level syllabus, in which I find it difficult to perceive any obvious connections to the First World War. Edward Thomas is frequently classified, rightly or wrongly, as a war poet and, therefore, his poetry is seen as belonging, sometimes exclusively, to that genre. This is really a mistake, since Thomas never wrote a graphic or detailed war poem and did not write poetry at all once he had embarked for France.
