BORN IN LONDON on 3rd March 1878, Philip Edward Thomas was the oldest of six sons. His parents (Philip Henry Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Townsend), although originally from Wales, classified themselves as Londoners. Edward grew up in various parts of London, including Lambeth, Wandsworth, Clapham and Balham, but due to frequent holidays spent in Wales and Wiltshire, he soon developed a life-long interest in nature and the countryside.
